Clacton Club - 12 Prints/12 DPIs - Judge Peter Epsley
Clacton Club - 12 Prints/12 DPIs - Judge Peter Epsley
The annual battle with the Clacton Camera Club is always an enjoyable and close faught event - much like a North London football derby between Arsenal & Spurs - fierce, competitive, but above all in the spirit of the 'game'. This years event was no acception but once again Clacton came out on top overall.
The judge - Peter Epsley, who is always worth a listen too - made the evening extra special by relaying some of the interesting stories of other club competitions he had attended over the years. At the end of the evening he was full of praise for the highest standard of entries he had even seen, giving the most full 20 scores ever (for him).
Thanks must be given to Bob and his team of skilled carpenters, who worked late into the night to finish the new print display boards, thus completing the Club's Jubilee Year competition upgrades. Great work Bob and thanks for stepping in to take the helm in the absence of George and Peter.
By the end of the print competition Clacton already had a slim lead, having gained more perfect 20 scores than Harwich - nevertheless, just like football, it's a game of two halves and there was still a chance that Harwich could steal the show in the end.
Just as always, Val, with the assistance of Adrian, came up trumps with the tea-break buffet spread, with the scotch eggs just that extra special and everybody 'filled their boots'.
On then to the second half with 24 DPI's to be judged by Peter. Once again, our large screen played a
huge part in making the 'show' a battle to be remembered. As the DPI's came and went it was clear to most people that Clacton were pulling further and further away.
At the end of the evening Bob gave out the result and indeed, Clacton were the victors once again. The evening ended as it had begun - in good cheer, many hand-shakes and hoping that out 5-way competition in October would be as much fun as this night was - however, we need to find some more chairs from somewhere.
Estimated Attendance: 50 people

Manningtree Club - 12 Prints/12 DPIs - Judge: Vic Hainsworth
Manningtree Club - 12 Prints/12 DPIs - Judge: Vic Hainsworth
The annual battle with our nearest rivals, Manningtree, who we have close ties with, once again was a very enjoyable evening. This year it was they that came out victors, which was well earned, as some of their prints and images were excellent. That said, the overall standard presented by both clubs was commented on more than once by our judge, Vic Hainsworth, as being exceptional good. Vic, who is always welcome at our club, gave his usual constructive comments and suggestions about every image and at the end of the evening he was given a well deserved round of applause.
The evening started by him judging the 24 mounted prints, with most of the honours going to the Manningtrees entries. Harwich's one saving grace was a perfect 20 score being awarded to the George (Fossey) print entitled 'Canterbury Man' (displayed above) - Well done George!
At half time, both teams enjoyed a magnificent spread arranged by Val (Green) and thanks must go to her and her kitchen staff helpers, for the efficient way that the catering was handled.
The second half started in a spectacular way, because as if by magic, our Club's new screen slowly descended from the hall's ceiling and gasps of amazement were heard from some of the Manningtree members. Like being at the movies, our new Canon projector sprung into action and their amazement continued as the first DPI to be judged was displayed on the huge, cinema-like silver screen, right across the back wall of the hall. It must be said, that although we lost the battle, we are perhaps winning the war relating to the best DPI equipment in our area, if not the whole of East Anglia. I can't imagine that any club could be giving a better viewing experience to their members and invited guests.
The 24 DPI images were displayed one after the other with superb clarity, contrast and sharpness and Vic, who has visited many other clubs, commented that it was like a "Panorama" display. Once again, most, if not all, of the honours went Manningtree's way, with two of their images being awarded perfect 20's.
This was the first 'Inter Club Battle' staged by the Club's new 'Competitions Team' - but nobody would have realised that, as Mandy, Mary and Bob (there is a film title there somewhere!) did an outstanding job all evening - very slick and professional MM&B - well done!
The evening ended as it had begun - in good cheer, many hand-shakes and even some kisses, with sentements that we would all meet up again soon.

Felixstowe Club - Coulton Cup Challenge
15 Prints/12 DPIs - Judge: Vic Hainsworth
Felixstowe Club - Coulton Cup Challenge
15 Prints/12 DPIs - Judge: Vic Hainsworth
WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS!!
After a close and tough battle the outcome was that we had 4 images scoring 20 points and Felixstowe had only had 3, with most of our other images scoring very well. Felixstowe had the best Photograph of the evening but we had the most points so we came home with the trophy. The Judge was Vic Hainsworth so it was a tough competition. I think I can safely say that the 5 of us that did turn out had a very enjoyable evening.

Matthews Shield v East Ipswich Club
12 Prints & 12 DPI's
This year was our turn to host the battle with the East Ipswich Camera Club to fight for the honour of winning the Matthews Shield. Always a close contest and this year was no exception, indeed it was perhaps the closest yet.
Print Competition - H&DCC Team: Naomi & Paul
Our judge, John Theobald, commented on the very high standard of entries and found it very hard to mark down the images, with a result that in the Print competition, he gave 11 of the 24 images his highest score. At the 9-apiece mark both clubs were neck and neck with not a fag paper between them. However, the last 6 to be judged saw East Ipswich start to edge forward and after the final image, they were 3 points ahead at the half-time stage.
Best Print Trophy went to Keith (East Ipswich)
DPI Competition - H&DCC Team: Chris & George
After an excellent buffet refreshment interval, organised by Val and Adrian, the second half kicked off under the control of Chris (Fossey), who stepped in at the last minute to run the laptop/projector - Many thanks Chris, greatly appreciated.
Just like the print competition, it was nip-and-tuck with the scores, as John (Theobald) once again found it hard to mark the images greater than 3-points apart from each other - this time there were 6 images that scored top marks and 11 just 1-point behind. The other 7 images were just 1 mark behind, unfortunately, our club had more lower scoring images than East Ipswich and so they won the battle overall. Well done East Ipswich and we look forward to next years return match at your place.
Best DPI Trophy went to Paul Oakley (East Ipswich)
