Eleven members of our club had a very enjoyable evening at the annual 8x8 competition hosted by Colchester Photographic society (8 clubs ,8 prints each by 8 different authors) . The judge was Paul Radden LRPS DPAGB EFIAP PSA2 and the man who teaches at judges school so was really great to see the master in action .
It was held in a church hall and the room was full with possibly 100 club members from the 8 clubs ,old friends enjoying meeting again and some new ones made whilst we enjoyed viewing all the prints before the evening started as they were on display at the back of the hall .
There were 2 trophies up for grabs ,1 for the best print overall and 1 for the highest scoring club
The evening got underway with an impressive 64 prints for the judge to view. Half way through we had a break with a superb light buffet provided by members of Colchester and tea's were served. The raffle was then drawn with Harwich having 4 of the winning tickets .
Entries from Harwich were from Paul (Simmons), Naomi , Val , John (Holland), Carol , Mark , George , Andy with 4 of them scoring a an impressive 17 points a piece
One print was put on the stand and the judge was so impressed he just said '20' couldn't critique it in any way and this proved later to be the winning one .
There were 7 prints scoring 20 ,Colchester had 2 ,Chelmsford 3 and Clacton 2 ,all were held separately for the judge to place at the end .
1st Place and the winner of the trophy was Colchester with Storm over Stokksnes by Colin Westgate
2nd Place was Chelmsford with Late Night Departure by Steve Birch
3rd Place was Chelmsford again with Lioness & Wildebeest Squaring up by Veronica Rice
Colchester won the second trophy with the highest points overall
Scores were
Colchester 149
Chelmsford 147
Clacton 140
Halstead 137
Great Notley 135
Harwich 129
Braintree 126
Alresford 126
So we didn't do too badly for our first time at one of these competitions and I think we all learnt a lot seeing some impressive prints and seeing an award winning judge in action .
