cscl globe - largest ship in the world
The world's largest ship arrived in the UK for the first time on 7th January 2015 and some of our club members were on the shores of Harwich and also out at sea, to welcome her arrival.
The Hong Kong-registered CSCL Globe, measuring more than 400m (1,313ft) in length, docked at Felixstowe loaded with about 19,000 standard containers. The previous largest ship to have docked at the port was the Maersk Triple-E, which arrived in November, carrying about 18,000 containers. The Globe left China in December on her maiden voyage, arriving at the Suffolk port sometime after 12:30 GMT.
The eagled eyed viewers will note the difference of the layout of the containers which arrived and which departed. Lots of boxes are missing from the rear, where gaps can be seen, however lots of the front containers on both sides have changed colour, thus the ship is returning to China either with a lot of UK products, or empty old containers!
Comment from Ron, who used to work on container ships "The ship I was on 30years ago could carry 1600 boxes and we had to wait for the tide before going into Felixstowe. How times have changed."
