h&dcc junior photographers section
In this our 59th year and in preparation for our Diamond Jubilee in 2016, the club's chairman, George Fossey has created a special Junior Members section whereby four young people between the ages of 14 and 18 will be granted what is in effect bursary style mebership of the club. The four Junior Photographers will each enjoy up to four years free membership worth up to £110 per year. This entitles them to attend all the meetings and events of the club, including participating in the bi-weekly photographic training sessions.
The club is aware of the current trend amongst many young people to use a smartphone or tablet camera to capture images, instead of a dedicated image taking device. In no way do the members belittle this modern trend, however, the art of pure photography should be passed down, rather that get swallowed up in modern technology. By creating this section, George and the current committee are leaving a legacy, which hopefully will encourage the next generation to enjoy photography, as they themselves do. This approach, as far we know, is the first of it's kind anywhere in the world and in that respect worthy of note.
With the above in mind, the Junior Photographers will be encouraged and nortured by their more mature peers in the club whenever possible. A special back-to-basics approach and individual learning curve will be taylored specifically to each of them as required and where possible, they will either be given or loaned equipment that they require.
As of February 2015, the club has two Junior Photographers, both are young lasses and both show great promise. Their level-headed attitude and obvious eagerness to learn photography has been greatly admired by the older members, so-much-so that they were appointed the joint responsibility of being the print competition secretary and as such, sit on the committee.
Although any young person can apply for one of the two vacant Junior Photographers bursaries, it would balance the section up if two young lads were accepted. However, as stated, anybody over the age of 14 and younger than 18 can apply.
It should be noted, that the sitting chairperson retains the right to terminate the conditions of the bursary at any time and for any reason. At the age of 18, the Young Photographer will be invited to carry on his or her membership of the club, however, everyone over the age of 18 must pay the same club dues.
