*********************************************************************************************

Although both cups were won by other clubs in 2016 and as the winners refused to host the event this year, our club once again did the honours. That said, the original concept of the 5-way contest, battling for two very expensive trophies that our club had provided, was that winners of the cups would host the event the following year. It remains to be seen what will happen in 2018 and if again the winners decline, it will be up to our committee to decide what to do.

However, once again, we had an enjoyable evening, both meeting some old pals and doing friendly battle with them. The venue this year was the very fine ‘Wix Village Hall’, a largish modern establishment built with funds from The National Lottery. Unlike our normal Monday club nights venue, the hall has a large, well-lit, parking area and everything is very ‘disabled friendly.

Our judge this year was Chrissie Hart from the Colchester Photographic Society, who from past knowledge, we knew would give some excellent critique. This was confirmed as she expertly first  expedited the 5 print images per club (25 in total) commenting fairly on each, before the interval.

The refreshment were provided and organised by our club members and part funded by the sale of raffle tickets. I can only speak for myself, but the ‘spread’ was both plentiful and very enjoyable, especially as I won one of the raffle prizes!

Sorry to say that as sometimes happens, a ‘technical gremlin’ tried to spoil the evening at the beginning of the DPI competition, however, our excellent competitions team as always came to the rescue and saved the day.

As with the print competition, Chrissie displayed her prowess in all things photography and marked the dpi’s in an expert fashion. That said, and something she admitted to me after the competition, she favoured those images that were ‘different’ and graphically composed (graphical montage), over more traditional, straight WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) images. Something that the likes of Ansel Adams would have contested and objected too!

Dpi
1st.   Felixstowe.    92
2nd.  Clacton.     88
2nd.  East Ipswich.   88
4th.   Manningtree.    85
5th.   Harwich.     84

A very close contest with Harwich  just 8 points less than the winning score

Thus Clacton won the Print cup and Felixstowe the DPI cup. Well done to all that took part and the standard of work was very high indeed
